Track update: The geotechnical report for the site was not good. The track was built on clay. Clay shrinks when it dries out and expands when it gets wet. Ideally, per the engineer’s design, we would have dug out 8 feet of clay and imported 8 feet of good base material. We couldn’t afford that. We dug the clay down to where there would be at least 6” of good fill on top of it with a layer of geotextile fabric to separate it from the clay. With the uphill drainage problem solved and the 3” asphalt mat on that good layer, I think it is stable and should last a long time. The site also had over 2’ of elevation difference from the SW corner (lower) than the home stretch. Whoever had the 3rd leg of the 4x100 relay has been running uphill the whole time! This area required a lot of fill material to be hauled in to get the site level. Fortunately, the LaFranchi family donated all the fill material and gravel we needed to level it up. Please thank them if you see them, it took a lot of truckloads to get up to grade. Wheeler Excavating helped us get all the big drain lines underneath the track surface, build the eco block retaining walls and has donated quite a bit of time and equipment to the project, please thank them also. The management and crews from Knife River (Asphalt) and Cascade Civil (Curb) did a great job helping us meet our deadline to get the surface on this year. Ideally, we would have built the infield, lighting and fence first then the track itself. The infield perimeter drainage is very labor intensive and would have been time and cost prohibitive to contract out and get it done this year. We had to choose whether to build the infield and drainage or the track first. We chose the track so the kids could have a safe place to run this season. We didn’t have time to deal with lighting and fencing, we will just have to deal with those as we can. We don’t have a solid schedule for the infield, we will work on it as much as we can. There is a mountain of work to do to get all the new drainage in, D-zones and field events built, etc. We will grade the infield to drain to the new drain lines in the meantime, so it doesn’t flood. We will protect the new track surface where we need to cross it when working on the infield, lighting, fencing. We have some plans for fundraising for the drainage system and infield that we will present at the Booster Club Auction. Thanks, Tank and Steve
