Local Heroes Reading to First Graders

Hundreds of first grade students from Coos Bay, Powers, Reedsport, Myrtle Point and Coquille all got to experience the Gift of Literacy over the last six months in their classroom.

On Wednesday May 11th, students gathered at Southwestern Oregon Community College in Coos Bay to celebrate their scholastic adventure together.

A few local celebrities like police officers and culinary students joined in for the main event to read stories and deliver a performance on why learning to read is important.

Students were gifted a bag of goodies with their favorite book from the program. This gift was made possible by a Rotary District Grant and

matched by each city's local rotary clubs.

Myrtle Crest first grader Eden Combs along with others were featured in the KCBY news story.

"I feel excited that I'm getting it," said first grader Eden Combs. "You can read different books any time you want, and if you get the type of book that you want, then you can read it."
